A small store in the heart of New York's Greenwich Village is resisting the ongoing process of displacement: Carmine Street Guitars. Guitar maker Rick Kelly and his young apprentice Cindy Hulej make custom guitars out of very special wood they salvage from old from old hotels, bars, churches and other old buildings in Manhattan. No other guitars sound and look like Rick's guitars - a good reason for many musicians like Bob Dylan, Lou Reed and Patti Smith to visit his small store in NYC. The beauty of each guitar and its rich sound are based on the history and uniqueness of the wood itself. Each guitar has its own New York history. And Rick's store is full of stories. In CARMINE STREET GUITARS we meet a variety of excellent musicians and artists. musicians and artists: Eszter Balint, Christine Bougie (Bahamas), Nels Cline (Wilco), Kirk Douglas (The Roots), Eleanor Friedberger, Bill Frisell, Dallas Good (The Sadies), Travis Good (The Sadies), Dave Hill, Jaime Hince (The Kills), Stewart Hurwood, Jim Jarmusch (Sqürl), Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Band), Marc Ribot, Charlie Sexton (Bob Dylan Band).
