Who We Will Have Been

Society/Family, Germany 2021

For filmmaker Erec Brehmer, a world collapses when his partner Angelina Zeidler dies in a car accident. They had met on Tinder a bit more than three years before Angi died, and loved each other intensely. Three years after they first met, they had moved in together, and were planning on getting married and having children. But in March, 2019, it was all over. Angelina was at the wheel when their car crashed. Erec sustained heavy injuries, but survived. Angelina didn't. "Who we were ended on that day. But some things have remained open," Erec thinks when he returns to the site of the crash. By way of making this film, he hoped to find closure. With the help of amateur videos, voice messages, diary entries and the music they enjoyed listening together, Erec sets out to find places and situations in which he can meet Angelina again. The film he created in the process is not only a powerful, authentic document of coming to terms with grief, but also a sensual invitation to life. A story about identity after the loss of a loved one.
